All the theoretical knowledge in the world doesn’t address the “passion” that one has for the art of jazz improvisation. While one’s passion can be nurtured and encouraged, it cannot be taught.
In order to cover the amount and type of material that is presented at the ijamjazz Summer Jazz Camp, the applicant must have a grasp of certain basic music fundamentals. Without the knowledge and practical application of these fundamentals—the ability to read music, for example—it would be impossible, in such a short period of time, to examine the complex chord and scale structures that form the basis for an understanding of straight-ahead jazz theory and improvisation.
The following prerequisites permit an appropriate starting point for this course of study.
The applicant can read music, can play all twelve major scales and the three forms—natural, harmonic, and melodic—of the minor scale, has worked with the blues structures, and has studied with an instrumental music teacher for at least one year.   We are now accepting applications for the 2012 ijamjazz camp.

Signed and notarized International Medical Policy Statement  (International Medical Insurance Policy.)
Signed Music Teacher Avowal (student campers only) attesting to applicant’s practical skills in all twelve keys of Major and minor (three forms) scales. (Music Teacher Avowal)

2012 IJAM Release and Waiver Form
All scholarship application materials must be received by April 1, 2012. After April 1, incoming applications will not be read. Applicants will be notified by April 15, 2012, as to scholarship recipients.
